Federer:It`s surreal
Roger Federer`s new No. 1 Roger Federer, who will officially replace Rafael Nadal from the top spot in the world rankings Monday, commented that he is the oldest leader in the ATP chart in history. It`s really a little surreal. For the first time I became No. 1 in 2004 - far back in time, and now I return to first place after 4-5 years of pause. Federer, 36-year-old after his 4:6, 6:1, 6:1 victory against the Dutchman Robin Haase on the 1/4-Finals tournament in Rotterdam, said in an interview with the ATP YouTube channel.
I think I was calm, I slept well, I watched the Olympics for 3-4 hours. Then I did a normal warm-up, everything was quite routine. My mind did not crawl to the left and to the right, like the Australian Open. I knew what I wanted to do and how I wanted to play, I was confident. It was a nice experience, the 36-year-old Swiss continued.
The loss of the first set reminded me that I had to fight for the victory that she would not be given to me. We had decided to enter the game analyzed by fixed football contacts a little more passively and carefully, with the idea of letting Robin beat me, not me to beat myself. I had to change tactics and play more aggressively, and that turned out to be a successful move. In the course of the game, I realized that I was victorious and that I was back in the first place.
Is it a celebration or a focus on the semi-final? Both. I have already drunk a glass of champagne, I will drink another one later. The good thing is that tomorrow (today i will play again) I will play again in the evening (against the Italian Andreas Seppi), so the whole day is ahead of me. I can sleep well and prepare for the semifinals. Maybe now I will play with less tension and this can help me to perform even better in the semi-finals.
Did I get a call from Rafah (Nadal)? No, but I do not expect a call from him. He`s doing great, I`m doing great, honestly, everyone in the tour is performing awesome. He finished as No. 1 in the world last year, and I do not think it bothers me to change it this week. I`m sure to some extent he enjoys it for me, just as I enjoyed him when he finished 2017 as No. 1. We support him in these moments, said Federer.
